Don't be blue, you're good

REVIEW - BLUETONES
The Garage

I WANTED this gig to be good, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the Bluetones didn’t.
A schoolgirl fan, I was among the group who thought they were sliced bread in the 90s, and fought the clichéd urge to fancy frontman Mark Morris.
A lacklustre start at the Garage in Highbury, compounded by Mark asking the audience what they thought “so far” and then adding “rubbish right?” It didn’t look good.
But they wheeled out the hits Slight Return – “their universal crowd pleaser” and Bluetonic – “the song they’ve never done a set without” – and the fidgety crowd livened up.
Problem is they’re doing a B-sides tour to promote their new album, so unless you bought all the singles, you’re not likely to know them.
Thing is, the Bluetones are a good band, I just don’t know if they think so.
Seeming slightly resigned to their perceived also-ran status, their biggest hit being debut album Expecting to Fly, a decade later and three albums on they come across wearisome.
They should know how good they are, even if they’re star ain’t shining as it once did.
Telling the crowd they play three songs for an encore if they’re having fun, they finished with If.
Jangly three-strong guitar groups were made for this tune.
