Bree's desperate journey
TRANSAMERICA - Directed by Duncan Tucker
Certificate 15
FELICITY Huffman is not only married to William H Macy but she
is also a fine character actor in her own right and this was
never shown more fully than in her leading, Oscar-nominated
role as a transgender character in the wonderfully intriguing
Transamerica.
With one week to go before final gender-reassignment surgery,
our heroine gets a phone call from a young man claiming to be
her son. Formerly known as Stanley, our heroine Bree (pictured)
has to decide what to do or rather whose advice to follow.
Her therapist gets her operation delayed until this issue of
the errant son is sorted out a rather awful thing to
happen and one which will make anyone considering parenthood
to perhaps think again.
Without an operation to go to, Bree does the right thing: she
gets on a plane to NY and goes to look for the boy who says
he is her son. Toby (played by Jason Zegers) encounters Stanley/Bree
as the protagonist disguises herself as a missionary, bailing
the boy out of jail and surprisingly getting him to come back
to LA with her via the open road.
Huffmans beautiful portrayal of this amazing character
complete with careful speaking style and fantastic hair
and makeup is astonishing. Her every movement is measured,
her every thought defined into her new identity. |
