PREVIEW: 02 WIRELESS FESTIVAL
Hyde Park
by Rory Carroll
THERE'S something novel about having a festival in the middle of a city. There may be more high-rise buildings than usual, but who needs fields when you have a giant park?
Heralded as Party in the Park for grown ups, the O2 Wireless festival has previously seen The Strokes and Kasabian appear alongside new talent like the Fratellis and the 747s. Spread out over three stages and now into its third year, the festival is returning to the capital between June 14 and 17 with a line-up as impressive as ever.
The White Stripes headline the opening day, showcasing tracks from forthcoming album Icky Thump – a title sure to go down well with audiences in northern England – and will be supported by Queens of the Stone Age.
It’s glo-sticks at the ready on Friday night, as Faithless headline alongside Badly Drawn Boy and the man named after a Will and Grace quote – Islington’s very own Just Jack. The party continues on Saturday, as legends Daft Punk meet nu-rave newcomers CSS and New York disco infiltrator LCD Soundsystem.
Chart favourites Kaiser Chiefs close the festivities on the 17th. It’s been two years since they first na-na-na-na-nahed their way into the charts, but after two successful albums the band have been allowed to hand select their own support acts in the form of some of the Britain’s best groups – Editors, The Cribs, The Rakes and The Twang.
With a cold snap forecast for the following weeks and more acts to be announced, the O2 Wireless Festival has given us even more reason to hope for a long hot summer.
