Pick of the Indies
TWO of the best films of last year make a welcome return to the Prince Charles this week: Volver, Pedro Almodovar’s lush, slightly surreal, glorious celebration of Spanish women with a stand-out performance by Penelope Cruz on Saturday and the wonderful Little Miss Sunshine (check cinema for times), which manages to be quirky and original without ever being annoying.
Film festivals are in full swing across the capital meanwhile – from the 21st Lesbian and Gay film festival which kicked off yesterday and runs until April 4 – to the Human Rights Watch festival which finishes next Friday.
Highlights of the gay film fest include James Bidgood’s fabulously kitsch erotic classic Pink Narcissus and strands on everything from Queer Britannia to “Femme” - the latter including Almodovar’s delicious 1980s’ classic, Women on the Verge of a Nervour Breakdown.
The Human Rights festival has three screenings at the Renoir for the first time this year – look out for Oscar-nominated The Lives of Others, a blistering indictment of the former East German regime, among others.
Finally, don’t miss the Curzon Soho’s tribute to the great Andi Engel, the godfather of indie cinema on Sunday. There’s a double-bill of his only film, Melancholia paired with one of Andi’s favourites: Nanni Moretti’s Dear Diary. |
