TORCH SONG TRILOGY
Bridewell Theatre

Nestled in the back streets of the City of London, the Bridewell Theatre is not the obvious place where you would expect the exuberant production currently playing until Saturday.
Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy is brought to life by the Tower Theatre Company in a superb fringe production following the love trials of Arnold Beckoff (Martin Jackson) a gay drag queen who discovers the course of true love never did run smooth.
Enter the bad man, Ed Reiss (Barry Heselden), who proceeds to steal Arnold’s heart, entering and exiting like an annoying Shakespeare character.
Bisexual and ‘in love’ with a woman, Laurel (Fenella Lee), Ed toys with Arnold’s emotions as he strives towards self-acceptance.
Interlaced in the clash of hearts are interludes of song dispersed throughout poignant moments throughout the play, sung by the deeply captivating voice of the Lady Blue (Fenella Lee).
This one will undoubtedly stir some flutter of emotion as I discovered. The exploration of identity and acceptance remain central to all of walks of life – yet this play touches on an era of sexual promiscuity still relevant today.
Until March 17
