Unique sounds from grand body
PREVIEW: ESBJORN SVENSSON
The Barbican
I HAVE been a fan of Esbjorn Svensson and his trio since I stumbled upon them at an event at the Swedish Embassy several years ago.
He is a virtuoso pianist, backed by supreme musicians, who presents be-bop, avant-garde and even hip-hop jazz and is still able to make it accessible.
The piano is a percussive instrument, as hammers hit the strings, but Svensson toys with its role, plucking the string with his fingers, creating dissonant echoes from the body of a grand, doing things I have never seen done with a piano before.
He is currently on a European tour and on Wednesday he is pitching up at the Barbican.
The trio is completed with bassist Dan Berglund and percussionist Magnus Ostrum, and there is a very close, symbiotic relationship between the musicians.
The tour is in support of their latest album Tuesday Wonderland.
If you can still get tickets for the concert, reach out with both hands.
