Stars line up to wipe out slavery
PREVIEW: THE VOICE OF SLAVERY
The Forum
by Adam Asher
KENTISH Town Forum is hosting a star-filled line-up to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.
The event a week on (March 25) Sunday will be hosted by actors Rhys Ifans, Sadie Frost and Samantha Morton, who will see in performances from Razorlight, Supergrass, Ed Harcourt, Finley Quaye, Nerina Pallot and many more. It is also rumoured that a very special guest act will also be performing.
Proceeds will in part be donated to Anti-Slavery International, the world’s oldest human rights charity, to help continue their lobbying work. It is estimated that 12 million people still live and work in contemporary forms of slavery.
The Voice of Slavery is also working to produce an anthology of historic and contemporary slave songs from around the world, some of which will be re-recorded by local artists. Event organiser Jonny Polonsky said: “We are sourcing songs that have all been written by people who have been enslaved. They are directly the voices of slaves.” The project’s patron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who Mr Polonsky met while fund-raising in South Africa, said: “I support this project unreservedly. Slavery is not a past evil – it is practised today and millions of people are enduring intolerable abuse and suffering with no means to protest. The Voice of Slavery is giving those people a voice.”
Tickets, at £25, are on sale from www.meanfiddler.com.
