Tribute to Andi
HE was the godfather of indie cinema, a much-loved former film critic from Germany who founded the film company Artificial Eye – still the leading British distributor of foreign-language and indie films.
But Andi Engel (pictured), who died on Boxing Day last year, was also a film-maker in his own right, making his directorial debut in 1989 with the moody political thriller, Melancholia.
Curzon Cinemas are paying tribute to Andi this month with two screenings of his only film, described by Variety as “ a cry out against complacency” at the Renoir and Curzon Soho.
The Curzon Soho will be pairing Melancholia with Nanni Moretti’s Dear Diary, a wry affectionate trawl through the Roman suburbs and one of Andi’s favourite films.
