RSC takes
on rural politics
AS YOU LIKE IT
Novello Theatre
FIRST performed in 1599, As You Like It is Shakespeares
expedition into pastoral politics, with the Forest of Arden
played off against the oppressive regime of the court.
A gnarled oak tree dominates the stage. The characters shivered
and sheltered from falling snow. Arden described as a
desert city in the play is not quite the
happy utopia we imagine.
The RSC have fashioned another safe, consummate production with
worthy performances from Barnaby Kay as Orlando and Lia Williams
as a efferescent Rosalind. Joseph Mydell was a curious Jacques
he put an interesting spin on the melancholy lord, delighting
in inflicting gloom on his exiled comrades. He over-egged the
seven ages speech, but still kept me smiling all
night.
