Take an early morning dip into this unpredictable
theatre romp
FIVE IN THE MORNING
Hackney Empire
The Bullion Theatre
FIVE in the Morning opens with three actors clad in swimming
attire on a starkly white set, squarely facing the audience.
As we hear instructions dictated to them over a pool tannoy
they duly attempt to obey every command, from a trivial shift
of posture to the complex order to form a human tower. Their
puzzled responses to the more bizarre commands regularly raised
a laugh.
But just as we begin to settle into the reality of the performance,
the lights go out and the theatre is plunged into a disturbing
nightmare sequence. Flashbulbs pop and a grating soundtrack
plays while two shadowy suited figures menacingly chase another.
Then as suddenly as it began the scene flicks back to its original
calm. The performance is based around these dramatic switches.
I found it impossible not to be engrossed by the performance
as what happens next is always utterly unpredictable. The chaotic
dark world that theatre company Rotozaza create in the nightmare
sequences is compelling. The sinister images presented to us
are never crystal clear, as is often the case in nightmares.
But I felt the opportunity to develop the contrasting white
daylight scenes was sometimes missed.
