KEISHA Buchanan is the only original member of the
Sugababes, which formed in 1998. They have five albums and one
Brit Award. Their new album Taller is their first UK No1. They
will be the first act to play at Wembly Stadium on June 24 when
they open for Take That.
Q: What’s your favourite Sugababes song?
A: Push The Button.
Q: You wrote that song about a boy you liked didn’t
you?
A: I was recording in Atlanta and there was an artist I
liked there, but he was really shy, so my producer Dallas told
me to drop hints.
Q: Who has given you praise that has really meant something
to you?
A: Kelly from Destiny’s Child says she really loved
Stronger.
Q: What is the role of girlbands? What kind of message do
the Sugababes try to promote?
A: We don’t like to take responsibility for being role
models, but we have no choice. My whole thing is for women to
respect their bodies. Don’t be bitchy and respect everyone.
Q: You have a reputation as a bitchy girlband.
A: We let actions speak louder than words – if we really
had a fight I wouldn’t be able to work with them. As soon
as Heidi joined the group we learned to respect each other.
I’ve been in the band since I was 12 – when Siobhan
left and said loads of things about us we didn’t even know
about it.
Q: Do you think you get a harder time because you’re
girls? Would people say that about a boyband?
A: Maybe it’s partly to do with being in a girlband,
but we are not obvious, we tried to be mysterious.
Because we wouldn’t talk to the tabloids when we first
started people made stuff up, maybe it was a backlash.
Q: Who are the best looking male and female popstars around?
A: Lemar, Shayne from X-Factor and Kimberly from Girls Aloud
– her lips are extremely sexy.
Q: What’s your proudest moment so far? When has your
Mum said ‘well done?
A: I don’t think she realises – she’ll say
“Oh my God she knew who were” about strangers in the
street.
And when Madonna said the only album that goes on in her house
is Sugababes, my mum was like “Oh my word”.
