Pick of
the indies
The Child
BELGIAN filmmaking brothers Luc and Jean-Piette Dardenna
won the Palme Dor at Cannes with this touching yet disturbing
story of a couple living virtually on the street and the future
of their baby.
The Child captures quite magically the realism of a documentary
while getting prime performances from the leading actors Jeremie
Renier and newcomer Deborah Francois.
The story follows Bruno, a thief and small time hustler, who
seems to be untouched by the fact that he is a father.
From begging and stealing, he manages to bring in some money
but relies mostly on the benefits given to his 18-year-old girlfriend
Sonia.
When she discovers that Bruno has let out her state-given flat,
the fury hits the fan.
It is clear that making a baby is a lot different than raising
one. Bruno tends to see everything in terms of cash and, shockingly,
this also applies to their baby while the couple tend to spend
what money they have on little luxuries.
When Sonia discovers that Bruno has in fact sold their baby
to black marketeers, she ends up in hospital and leaves Bruno
to sort out the mess for himself.
A wonderful, precise drama. |
