THE Shockwaves NME tour has been the most successful to date.
Featuring some of the biggest names in music, including the Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian and Amy Winehouse, it’s been, for the most part, a local affair, with some the best gigs going on at the Astoria in Soho.
Sadly the venue – which has hosted many of the world’s most famous performers – looks set to be bulldozed, even though more than 30,000 people have added their name to petition to save it. If you want to check it out, log on to www.petitiononline.com/savethea.
Meanwhile, The Stay Aways, the subject of my very first Demo of the Week – a weekly pick of the best unsigned bands around – are holding their own residency at one of Camden’s best pubs. See them at the Constitution in St Pancras Way on the first Saturday of every month. They live in Camden Town, so they won’t have far to carry their instruments to the Constitution, or when they headline at the Dublin Castle pub next Friday.
The Towers of London are also playing the Islington Academy next Friday. I only mention it because Donnie Tourette’s gaggle seem to spark interest – no hits and they’re already doing Hello! and OK magazine spreads. Not that I think that’s rock and roll. Stupid haircuts too.
