The Review - AT THE MOVIES with WILLIAM HALL

Bean is a hard nut

THE ILLUSIONIST
Directed by Neil Burger
Certificate 18

STUBBLE-jawed paratrooper Sean Bean (pictured) comes home to London after a tour of duty in Iraq to find his world has fallen apart. No hero’s welcome. His wife has left him, and the city is full of sneering yobs, with the TV news showing random violence everywhere across the country.
But in that rucksack he’s toting is an arsenal of weapons smuggled out of the war zone into a new urban one. From AK47s to shotguns and pistols. Message clear: here is one hard nut you don’t tangle with.
Bitter and disillusioned, he forms a group of crime victims who, like himself, feel society has betrayed all he fought for. He turns them into vigilantes, meting out instant punishment to the ungodly with baseball bats and knee-capping.
Writer and director Nick Love brings a savage realism to a theme designed for the Lock, Stock and eye-for-an-eye brigade, backed by a pulsating musical score from David Julyan.
Stand by for nerve-shredding moments, and not for the squeamish.
