Daring stuff: Akala fuses genres effortlessly |
Dynamite's little bro's a blast
REVIEW - AKALA
Dingwalls By Kate Sole
IT was a family affair last Wednesday at Dingwalls
as Ms Dynamite popped down to watch little bro Akala (Kingslee
to his mates) MC, freestyle and lyrically impress a very mixed
crowd.
Akala, who has been flirting with the British hip-hop scene
for a few years, released his debut single War/Banga 4 Da Streets
in 2004, but now feels its time for him to make his move
and April 24 sees him release his debut album Its Not
A Rumour. His single The Edge is out April 10.
The music is intelligent and daring, fusing rock with hip-hop
so effortlessly.
He is not afraid to take inspiration from areas previously out
of bounds to hip-hop, and the likes of The Clash and Tomcraft
are sampled without losing any of the raw quality of rap.
His tunes mock the blingtastic elements of US hip-hop and focus
on real social issues.
Akalas drive is going to get him far and his charisma
will get him noticed just as long as he keeps it a London ting.
