Folk from the heart of egypt
PREVIEW:EL TANBURA
Union Chapel
THERE is a burgeoning world music scene in London currently, with the major concert halls offering musicians from across the globe the opportunity to show off their talents.
This week, the Egyptian ensemble El Tanbura appear at the Union Chapel, presenting ancient folk melodies inspired by the Simsimiyya – a lyre dating back to the times of the Pharoahs.
The musicians are from Port Said and the ensemble was formed by Zakaria Ibrahim in 1989, who spent nine years convincing veteran musicians to come together and perform.
Playing folk songs, they also found singers from trades such as fishing, market trading and building, where folk singing was a part of every day life.
They appear at the Union Chapel on Sunday evening and, in such a setting, the concert should be a haunting and spiritually uplifting occasion.
