The Review - GROOVES with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

Demo of the week Engerica

THE demo that caused most intrigue in the office this week was a metal band called Engerica.
A standout front cover with melting faces – a la that scene in Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom – and horror green bogey writing that spelt out The Smell.
So far so good. Comical and eye-catching.
Here’s where I own up. I own no Black Sabbath and don’t frequent goth or metal clubs, but I wanted to be convinced.
But... With pedestrian rhyming: “Liar cheater bogey eater/ Look out everyone here comes Peter” and these squealing notes that just sink, plus a lot of shouting, I wasn’t feeling it.
I’m still waiting for a good metal or goth band to turn me.
And seeing as they’re Essex boys, why put on an American accent?
To give them their dues, though, Sean Adams, a Drowned in Sound reviewer, called them “new and boundary kicking,” and said they “sum up EVERYTHING.”
And according to the band’s drummer Neil, “Engerica will not be deterred by cretins who do not believe in this band and how important we are!”
So that’s me told.
