Demo of the week The Stay Aways
I LOVE the idea of penniless musicians trekking miles in
the snow, holes in their shoes, to personally deliver their
demo to me.
That’s why I was so disappointed that The Stay Aways,
my first Demo of the Weekers, only live round the corner from
Grooves HQ in Camden Town, and probably just dropped it in when
they popped out for milk.
But I couldn’t really turn down the melodic indie trio,
despite their name, which, yes, did provoke a joke or two in
the office.
Frontman Liam John describes them as “a misunderstanding
between the Beatles and Wire”.
Lovely bittersweet harmonies surge through the two-track demo,
Something to Say and (the less catchily named) E to C Sharp
Minor, giving them an almost epic feel. Maybe lay off the Prozac
though lads.
