Thigpen will beat out time on Dean Street
PREVIEW - ED THIGPEN
Pizza Express, Dean Street
THE legendary American jazz drummer Ed Thigpen is appearing at Pizza Express Dean Street on Tuesday as part of the Stunt Records Week.
Thigpen is one of the great percussionists ever to have emerged having worked alongside a catalogue of jazz greats.
Between 1954 and 1958 he worked with Dinah Washington, the Bud Powell trio and Billy Taylor among others.
He was part of the Oscar Peterson trio from 1959, before leaving the group in 1965 to tour with Ella Fitzgerald.
He’s worked with Johnny Mathis, Pat Boone, and again with Fitzgerald as part of a trio led by pianist Tommy Flanagan.
From 1972 onwards he has mainly been based in Europe, living in Copenhagen, teaching and touring.
How many other musicians have a record as impressive as this.
So on Tuesday he is with his Scantet, which features Jens Winther on trumpet, Tomas Frank on tenor sax, Olivier Antunes on piano and Jesper Bodilsen on bass.
He is there for one night only so book fast to avoid disappointment.
