The Boy Least Likely to - play Scala |
Likely to make great night out
REVIEW - THE BOY LEAST LIKELY TO
Scala by RICHARD OSLEY
IT’S only February but it might just be possible that the Scala won’t stage a better gig this year.
This was a triumph for a band who ignore the rules and use recorders and glockenspiels instead.
The Boy Least Likely To ended their first nationwide tour by filling the dancefloor with kids’ party balloons and trotting their giant stuffed toy mascots on stage for a final flourish.
They ran through their debut album, The Best Party Ever, with confidence and charm that was missing when I saw them last year.
During their rattly cover of George Michael’s Faith, they even brought the music to a standstill. Twice. Halfway through, a balloon floated on stage and one half of front duo Pete Hobbs burst it. “You kinda ruined the moment,” frowned other half Jof Owen. Hobbs replied: “I made the moment.” Their repartee is as engaging as their music, a brand of twinkly indie pop that Belle and Sebastian would be proud of.
It might even be time to forgive them for touring with boring James Blunt last year.
If they retain their sense of fun and keep the electric guitars in their cases, BLLT will one day get the recognition they deserve. They didn’t just make the moment, they made for a great night out.
