Dersu Azala
Japanese movie Dersu Azala is based on the memoirs of Russian explorer Vladimir Arseniev. The film follows his trek into the Siberian hinterland and focuses on his relationship with a nomadic Goldi tribesman who leads him across the dramatic landscape of a forgotten world.
At first the Russians feel their guide is little more than a noble savage, but they soon realise, through studying his relationship with the natural world around him, that he inhabits a of level of humanity those in the ‘civilised’ world have lost touch with.
