THIS oh-so predictable romantic comedy about a busy-body mother meddling in her daughters’ love lives has a couple of cringing scenes which will raise some kind of chortle. Otherwise it’s all too predictable fare.
Daphne Wilder (Diane Keaton) is a clucky mother who lives her life through her three daughters. They are a mixed bunch.
The regular type of gal Maggie (Lauren Graham), her attractive sister Mae (Piper Perabo) and then dippy kid sister Milly (Mandy Moore).
Milly is the apple of the eye but there is a problem.
Whenever she brings a potential hubby home, he is a total waste of space.
Daphne decides you just can’t leave such important matters as affairs of the heart to chance, so she resorts to internet ads to find her daughter a true love.
We learn she has had a tough time in her love life, giving her the motivation to interfere with her daughters’ romantic entanglements.
Milly then stumbles blindly across not one but two men of her dreams, and her internal battle to make the right choice begins. Should it be musician Johnny (Gabriel Macht) or well-scrubbed architect Jason (Tom Everett Scott).
The course of true love never runs smoothly – and if it did, there would be no rom-coms like these. But we all know it is going to unravel spectacularly, a couple of lessons will be learnt and they will all live happily ever after.
The problem is, the characters here are pretty shallow, meaning there is a good chance that by the end of the film, you won’t care what happens to any of them anyway.
The crucial part of the film is the relationship between Keaton’s character and Moore.
Thankfully this works a little and is a saving grace in an otherwise slushy, sugary and occasionally painful chick-flick. |
