JEFFREY DAHMER IS UNWELL
Kings Head by Rebecca Omonira-Oyekanmi
THE Jeffrey Dahmer of Alan Francis and Mike Hayleys
brilliant play is described as the most pitied serial
killer in American history.
However gruesomely fascinating, the enigma of the necrophiliac
Dahmer does not play an obvious role in the production. Instead
we are invited to wonder at the hilarious but unnerving Alan,
a serial collector of serial killers.
As well coping with the end of his relationship to Kate, the
unfortunate Mike has had to live with Alan for eight months.
As they bicker the audience are treated to comic visual delights.
Alans screening for finger prints on a bag
of Quavers whilst destroying Mikes carefully constructed
model plane involved little dialogue but had the audience roaring.
Alan Francis performance as Alan was mesmerising. As Euan,
Alans bargain-mad academic brother, Francis
displays yet more of his superb ability to rouse a reserved
theatre audience through the physicality of his performance.
The comedy of Jeffrey Dahmer is Unwell is sharply offset by
Mike Hayleys transformation from the anxious and depressed
Mike, to crazed serial killer Derek Northam.
This surreal exploration of obsession and the different ways
it manifests is amusing yet dark. A very entertaining evening.
