The Review - EATING OUT with TATIANA VON SAXE - Restaurant Review

Head Chef at Cumin Kamalsingh Rawat

Cumin here and spice up your life

LOCATED near Swiss Cottage on the second floor of the O2 Shopping Centre in Finchley Road, this restaurant is ideal for an evening combining an outing to the cinema which is across from the restaurant. Of course they have thought of this. If you show your cinema ticket then you can take advantage of their special dinner (£14.90) for two with a choice of two starters and two main dishes and a soft drink.
On arrival at the O2 Centre housing some shops and a variety of restaurants you will find large aquariums with beautiful tropical fish. Water fountains next to the escalators and an airy glass lift take you to the upper floors.
Husband and wife team Pam and Sirnjeet Kalwan claim a totally different style of Indian cuisine. Light dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, no GM foods, no additives or colourings and no excess oils and fats. Each dish is spice-rated.
“We wanted to create a new concept in casual dining, combine old and new by reintroducing traditional flavours but with a modern twist,” says Pam who worked on her concept for eight years.
The restaurant is modern with a lot of lighting but I enjoyed sitting at one of the outside tables and watch passersby whilst we had one of their freshly pressed juices and exotic shakes. The apple, carrot and ginger was excellent at £3.l5. A meal in itself.
Our meal consisted of a Poppadom Basket (£1.99), the Dum Ke Kebab (minced lamb with ginger, green chillies, mint and spices ,£4.95), a Batata Wada (spicy mashed potato, dipped in batter, deep fried and served with a mint sauce, £3.55), Tandoori Prawns (marinated king prawns cooked over the charcoal tandoor, £5.95), the Tal Tala Jhinga (prawns covered in sesame seed and red chilli sauce, £4.95), Chicken Tikka Masala (cooked in tomato sauce and flavoured with garam masala, coriander and lemon, £6.95) and Cumin Aloo (baby new potatoes tossed with cumin seeds and fresh coriander, £2.95).
The bill came to £52.46 which included a good bottle of Pinot Griogio Marchesini, £13.25) and the service charge.
They do home deliveries, offer express meals such as a £25 Sampler and a £30 Party Platter (which serves 4).
You are given Privilege card so that you get a 10 per cent off the food bill at the restaurant on your next visit.
The menu includes a variety of breads ranging from £1.75, rice and chutneys and pickles, Cobra, Rasa, and Kingfisher Indian Beers at £2.95 and the large bottle at £4.20,
Sparkling wine (Cava) from Spain is £14.95, Rose Whispering Hills White Zinfandel from California is £14.75 and their house wine: either a Spanish Muscadet at £11 or a Tempranillo at £11.
