Fired-up
Rakes revel in top-billing status
REVIEW - THE RAKES
Astoria by Andy Dangerfield
NO wonder wiry Rakes frontman Alan Donohoe seems so excited
this is their first headline and sell-out gig at the
2,000 venue.
The crowd, in their late teens and early 20s were fired up by
adrenaline-fuelled opening number Retreat a charming
ditty about binge drinking.
Their unashamedly cockney sound is like fusing the Clash with
the Streets.
It wasnt all sweat and shouting though. A low point of
the set was the slower songs in the middle, and even bringing
their mate Ethan onstage to play the tambourine couldnt
save them.
But their catchy, angular rock soon kicked in again for the
shamelessly political Strasbourg, with Donohoe swinging his
microphone in the air, lunatic drummer Lasse Petersen going
wild and the kids crowd surfing to the front to conclude this
chaotic live performance.
