The Review - GROOVES with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

Why Costa's keeping his feet firmly on the ground

INTERVIEW - Charlotte Chambers talks to Antony Costa

ANTONY Costa was one-quarter of boyband Blue. Previously starring in Grange Hill, as a part of Blue he sang with Stevie Wonder, Angie Stone, and Elton John.
Sir Elton was the one who advised the boys to split on a high, which they did, in early 2005. He releases his debut single Do You Ever Think of Me on 6 February.
Q: Do you ever go out in Camden?
A: I’ll go out in Hampstead and I’ve been to the Flask in Highgate. I don’t really go out in Camden Town – it’s a bit weird.
Q: You’ve mentioned staying grounded in the past – when Blue first took off – and how people changed with you. Now that you’re a solo act, are people different with you?
A: I judge people on first meetings – if I don’t like people I’ll keep it to myself. But ever since I did the jungle people have been coming up to me like I’m a bit of a geezer.
I’ve always kept myself grounded, it’s the people around you who change.
Q: Who do you still keep in touch with in the band?
A: We all keep in touch, we spoke just before Christmas. Lee and Simon have launched solo careers.
Q: So, tell me about your new single.
A: It’s very different from Blue. My tunes are more guitar-based. My single is similar to my album – real musicians, real music. And I’ve written a couple of tracks.
Q: Do you have a
plan B?
A: You’ve got to keep your options open. Hopefully presenting in the future, and if an acting job came up I’d be interested – I’d like to do a soap like Eastenders.
Q: What do you like/dislike about the celeb circuit?
A: I like going to the parties and meeting new people. I take everything in my stride. You just get on with it.
Q: How do you think people see you?
A: A bit of a wild boy – what 21-year-old doesn’t want to go and enjoy themselves? But at 24, I’ve matured a lot now.
Q: What do you make of being a celeb?
A: I love it. It’s a job where you get applauded for what you do. It’s when people don’t recognise you in the street, or don’t want to interview you, that you should worry. I ain’t got time for people who moan. We get to do a job that Joe Public would give their right arm to do. Some people don’t deserve it if they don’t appreciate what they have.
