Grizzly Man
German director Werner Herzog has turned his attention to documentaries
having a devastating success with Grizzly Man, one of
the most unusual, intense and blackly comic documentaries to
be seen of late.
Grizzly Man concerns American ex-actor Timothy Treadwell, a
self-styled Grizzly bear guru and nature expert, whose love
of the bears and, as Herzog uncovers, more of himself, brings
about his own death at the claws of a bear.
Taking incredible footage and adding in sensitive interviews
with those who knew and loved Treadwell, Herzog brings a mass
of information to the viewer in a completely intelligible and
fascinating way. This is an astounding bit of filmmaking
not po-faced or precious. Grisly, yes. Grizzly, yes.
