Philosophical collapse has laughs throughout
STING FOR NOLTE
Old Red Lion
DIRECTOR Tom Lister’s hilarious new play is refreshingly original, with laughs from start to finish.
The scene is set in an Oxford university lecture hall where philosophy lecturer, Allen Malcolm (Daniel Pirrie) unfolds the disintegration of his relationship with his fiancée, Bessie (Kati Markkannen).
Absurdly it all begins after poor Bessie presents Allen with tickets to see Sting in concert, following his long-suffering days to complete an important philosophy paper on Descartes.
After politely receiving the tickets, Allen goes on to reveal his sheer hatred for Sting. “Sting is an awful, awful man” he cries, his rage building as the play progresses.
Actor Nick Nolte, with whom Allen has developed a strange obsession, turns out to be his salvation.
Allen convinces Sting to remake every single film and TV programme starring Nick Nolte.
The lecture is cleverly accompanied by an amusing Powerpoint slideshow where Pirrie’s excellent grasp of comedy is shown during the increasingly irrational lecturer.
The farcical elements of the play serve to inject escapism and reveal shrewd observations on the part of writer Tom Lister.
You cannot fault this tight piece of comedy, which cleverly uses the one-hour lecture time to subtly explore something deeper and less palpable than the sharp and funny script.
