Extravaganza of classic soul
PREVIEW - SAM MOORE
Barbican
by Richard Osley
SAM Moore – the Sam in Sam and Dave, soul’s all-time greatest duo – is the special guest at an extravaganza at the Barbican this weekend.
The kind of vintage soul music that everybody likes, Sam can still belt out classics like Soul Man and Hold On I’m Coming better than anyone else because they were his songs in the first place.
The Dave in the double act, Dave Prater, died in a car crash in 1988 – Sam was hardly on speaking terms at the time. It would have been great to have seen the two in action as a pair before they fell out – but even on his own Moore, as his recent London shows suggest, can timewarp us back to a time when soul’s true power was its simplicity. Contemporary soul singers could take note.
Moore is the prize booking of the Barbican’s Soul Britannia weekend. The Brand New Heavies kick things off on Friday, a bit of a yawn, but stay tuned for the main feasts on Saturday when British veterans Linda Lewis and Cymande cut shapes with the rare talent of Madeline Bell.
Bell returns on Sunday to turn the heat up with Moore, Eric Burdon (The Animals) – not quite sure how he qualifies for a soul fest but he is a big name – and Jimmy James. Tickets range from £10 to £25.
