All about Beethoven
PREVIEW: STEVEN ISSERLIS
Wigmore hall
STEVEN Isserlis is appearing at Wigmore Hall this week presenting two concerts all about Beethoven.
He is one of Britain’s leading cellists, mastering a really distinctive sound.
For a while now Isserlis has clearly had a special affinity for the great composer, even writing a children’s book about him, Why Beethoven Threw the Stew.
At the Wigmore on Sunday there is a special Beethoven day in which the cellist is joined by pianist Robert Levin.
In the first concert, at 11.30am, they present Beethoven’s 12 Variations in F on Ein Madchen oder Weibchen, Seven Variations on Bie Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen, both from Mozart’s Die Zauberflote, as well as 12 Variations on a Theme from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus.
At 4pm, the pair will present Beethoven cello sonatas in F, G Minor, A, C and D.
This concert should be very special as it is set to last most of the evening.
Cleverly, the schedulers have included two intervals, one of half an hour, the other for an hour to allow time for concert goers to enjoy dinner. It all sounds terribly civilised.
Isserlis is no stranger to the Marylebone concert hall, often appearing with some of the world’s leading musicians and ensembles, but it is always a treat getting to watch someone quite so talented close up.
