Impersonations hit the London spot
THE ICONS IN LONDON
Venue theatre
BORN in London to music hall performer parents, Greg London always dreamt of reaching the West End.
His family moved to the mining community of Anthracite in Northern California when London was five.
After being sacked from his job at Kmart, he hit the road as an impersonator at corporate events and weddings, finally ending up in Las Vegas.
By his own admission, the showman heard voices in his head from a young age.
His pre-recorded voiceovers, that sound a bit like a combination of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kermit the Frog and Elvis Presley, pose as his conscience and guide the audience through London’s ‘fairytale’ life.
His West End debut sees him impersonate Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Tom Jones, without any apparent humility.
A parody of itself, the show appears to be the result of an adolescence spent idolising 1960s pop stars.
But despite a formulaic storyline and the musical impersonations being an abomination – his daddy role-play with the sexily-dressed backing singers is particularly nauseating – the show undoubtedly has its moments and hangs together well.
His Austin Powers impression – which doesn’t involve singing – is spot on and the Ozzy Osbourne and Kermit duo is genuinely funny.
Ignoring the souvenir programme’s shameless flaunting of his two-property fortune and ‘comfortable lifestyle’, one can only be pleased the man is living his dream.
Many audience members were clearly loving it and London will certainly have many more audiences clapping and singing for weeks to come.
