Hot NME touring for the new year
PREVIEW: NME Tour
THE NME Awards tour, probably the biggest and bestest of showcases for new and established bands, begins next month.
And this will be the biggest one so far. Not only will there be one-off gigs from artists we have come to love, but a stable of bucking young steeds are scheduled to tour the country, and it’s not even just the one, it’s two tours – indie rock and indie rave.
The indie rock tour, featuring The Automatic and The Horrors sounds promising.
But the rave bands look like a washout to me. The Klaxons are good but the New Young Pony Club were dismal the last time I saw them. But I guess a bill of four of five acts will turn up pounds as well as coppers.
Meanwhile big name performers such as the seducing Amy Winehouse, the queen of ankle shaking smoking salon music, are also taking part.
She’s not travelling far to play her NME gig – she’ll be at The Astoria on February 19 to sing tracks from her new(ish) album Back To Black.
Other acts to make a date with are The Kings of Leon, (the wonderful) The Shins and Maximo Park, although unfortunately some are already sold out. But good newer bands such as Larrikin Love and The Holloways are worth catching, while The Young Knives and Jamie T should be oodles of fun. If there were any to miss, Regina Spektor – “she’s a New York Russian, how cool” – ain’t my cup of tea although the musico geeks who log into the music website Drowned in Sound seem to want to marry her so...
And The Rapture, a hot new band everyone’s talking about, seem like loudmouth fools to me. But that’s going on second-hand information so again, what can I say, although no one seems to want to marry them.
Even the calamitous Babyshambles are booked to play, and some say they are actually quite good.
