Pick of the Indies
DIRECTOR Robert Altman’s last film, A Prairie Home Companion, is being screened at the Curzon with a question and answer session afterwards with Altaman expert and film writer David Thompson and Mike Figgis discussing the late director’s life and work.
The film itself is one of Altman’s best, and boasts a stellar cast including Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson and American radio stalwart Garrison Keillor as himself.
The story revolves around the final night of his show, a Prairie Home Companion, which is due to be scrapped by the station’s new owner, played by the evergreen Tommy Lee Jones.
The film works on many levels – it looks like an Edward Hopper painting, has a quirky storyline and the music is simply superb.
