Lionel Ritchie tops bill at stadium’s only summer concert

ARSENAL confirmed last night that only one concert will be staged at the Emirates Stadium this year – featuring Commodores legend Lionel Ritchie – after controversially winning permission to hold up to three events annually.
Following the success of last year’s two Bruce Springsteen concerts, the football club won approval for up to three live music events at the stadium, to protests from some residents.
But a spokeswoman last night confirmed that June’s concert – 95.8 Capital FM’s Summertime Ball – will be the only music event staged at the stadium this year.
Soul singer Lionel Ritchie will appear alongside rapper Akon, American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, X-Factor winner Leona Lewis, dance producer Calvin Harris, girlband The Saturdays and members of boyband Blue, who are to reunite at the concert for the first time since their split in 2005.
Shontelle, the 23-year-old behind recent hit single T-Shirt, former Mis-Teeq singer Alesha Dixon and boy band JLS joined the line-up this week.
The open-air Summertime Ball will be a six-hour musical marathon, running from 4pm to 10pm on Sunday, June 7.
Town Hall Lib Dem deputy leader Councillor Terry Stacy said: “Arsenal worked closely with the council to minimise disturbance from last year’s Bruce Springsteen concerts and that will continue with this concert.”
Siobhan McCreesh, head of events at 95.8 Capital FM, said: “The Emirates Stadium is a fantastic choice for Capital FM’s return to open-air summer events. It has the capacity we were looking for of over 50,000, is in a great London location and has incredible facilities.”
A donation of £100,000 from the proceeds of the event will be made to the radio station’s charity Help a London Child.
Tickets are on sale at www.capitalfm.com, on 0871 22 22 958 or at www.ticketmaster.co.uk.
