Buried treasure: Time capsule will bring news from the past for 2060 generation
TOYS, a copy of the Tribune and photographs are in a time capsule buried in the foundations of a community centre being built in Finsbury. The capsule includes building plans for the new Three Corners Centre in Community Gardens, Rosoman Street, and a letter from 10-year-old Rae Walsh.
A plaque marking the burial spot, on a path running in front of the new centre, will give instructions for the capsule to be unearthed in 50 years’ time.
The two-storey building, which will house services for young people and a new adult learning centre, is due to be completed next autumn.
In total, more than £2.4million is being spent on the project, made up of £1.7million from regeneration body EC1 New Deal for Communities, £193,000 from Islington Council and £569,000 from the Learning and Skills Council.
EC1 New Deal board chairman Matthew Humphreys said: “This is a really significant project for us. It’s good to know we are investing in a community centre that will help people living in the area for many years to come – long after the EC1 New Deal for Communities programme comes to an end in 2011.”
