‘Dirty tricks’ claim over shop petition
A SUPERMARKET owner claimed on Monday there had been a campaign of “dirty tricks” by competitors to stop her opening a shop serving alcohol in Archway. Senkay Hussein alleged that a petition with 33 signatures opposing the opening of Crisp and Fresh in Holloway Road contained names of residents who in fact had not objected.
Islington’s licensing committee heard that four residents named on the petition had contacted Ms Hussein and the council’s legal department to say they did not oppose the store and had not given permission for their names to be used.
The petition objected to plans for an off-licence at the store and warned there was already a serious problem with binge drinking in the area. It also pointed out there were four off-licences and three pubs nearby.
Ms Hussein said: “I had people coming into my shop from next door saying they had seen the petition and had asked for their names to be removed because they hadn’t signed it. I suspect that a business rival in the area may have been up to dirty tricks.”
None of the objectors turned up at the meeting, where the off-licence won approval. A council spokesman said the committee had been told that some residents maintained they had not signed the petition.
