War crime cover-ups
• I WELCOME Yael Kahn’s letter which insightfully comments on a recent Channel 4 programme about the fatal shooting, by the Israeli army, of the British photographer and peace activist Thomas Hurndall, and reports on her subsequent decision to set up a community-based group, the Islington Friends of Yibna, a refugee camp in Gaza Strip (Witness to bravery, October 17).
Having been born and brought up in Israel, I am only too familiar with the realities portrayed by the Channel 4 programme – the indiscriminate shooting of Palestinian children as if they were “clay pigeons”, the cover-up methods used by the Israeli army to conceal war crimes, and the continued siege of Gaza Strip which imposes a collective punishment on its 1.5 million residents.
The parents of Tom Hurndall showed the utmost bravery and endurance in fighting for justice for their son, but many Palestinian children are being killed, maimed, beaten and imprisoned with no one to defend their basic human rights.
The grassroots activities of Islington Friends of Yibna will be a fitting tribute to the memory of the hundreds of children whose lives were snapped out with impunity by the mighty Israeli army, and to the bravery of Thomas Hurndall, who was prepared to sacrifice his life for the sake of those children.
