Market spruce-up
VICTORIAN buildings once earmarked for demolition at Smithfield Market are to be protected from the elements.
The market buildings along Farringdon Street would have been bulldozed had a plan to build offices gone ahead. They will now be repaired by the City of London and developer Thornfield Properties following a threat by conservation group English Heritage to take enforcement action.
The buildings have lain neglected – deliberately so, according to some – for nine years. They are to be made wind and waterproof before the winter.
Plans by developer Thornfield Properties to demolish the Victorian general market building, its annex and the Red House, and replace them with a steel-and-glass complex of offices and shops were rejected by Planning Secretary Hazel Blears in August.
Thornfield Properties said it would draw up new plans for the site in the near future.
