Sobell secrets
• APPARENTLY, the PMP report on the Sobell Leisure Centre is not being made public because it is “commercially sensitive” (If the Sobell is bulldozed will a new centre go up? October 10). I fail to see how it can be.
Phrases like “commercially sensitive” are used when central or local government enters into contracts with private commerce. These contracts are invariably very good for the private party and very bad for the public one and “commercial sensitivity” is invoked to conceal the fact from inquisitive taxpayers.
But here it seems we have Councillor Ruth Polling telling us that “Nothing will happen at the Sobell until we have secured a deal with a commercial partner...”
If there is no contract there can be nothing to hide so what can be “commercially sensitive”?

• EVERYONE involved in Anaconda Swimming Club welcomes the decision by Islington Council to include a swimming pool in the much-needed redevelopment of the Sobell Centre.
With more than 400 members aged four to 18, our growing club will have a pool where swimmers can benefit from the kinds of facilities available in most other boroughs. Water polo, an increasingly popular aquatic sport, will also benefit.
A competition pool will be a showcase for aquatic sports in Islington. It will enable the community to see the excellence of Islington’s swimming teams at first hand as they compete against other boroughs. Instead of always competing away from home, Islington teams will have a home advantage.
An important outcome will be to attract more people of all ages to participate in a sport which has well-documented health benefits.
Congratulations to Islington Council!
