Warning light shows
• THE attention drawn to the presence of mercury, a poison, in disused energy-saving lamps is an alert of great value (Give us bins for batteries, October 10).
The council and indeed the public have made great efforts in recycling. However, noxious waste, which poisons people, is in need of attention.
The health of the community could be very adversely affected when new legislation makes these light bulbs compulsory. They will replace incandescent lamps in which 90 per cent of the energy becomes heat.
A section in the bottle waste bins or mandatory supply of a freepost disposal envelope with each light bulb purchased might be a desirable step while there is still time to set up arrangements. Batteries could usefully be included in such provisions as they are non-recyclable and contain noxious metals.
