Plugging a drains gap
• AFTER another wet summer brought chaos and misery to towns in the North East and South Wales, the Tribune was right to draw attention to the threat of urban flooding to our streets and homes (Sewage flooding warning as gardens fail to soak up rain, October 10). I’m therefore delighted that at its meeting on October 9 the council voted unanimously in support of a plan proposed by Green Party councillor Katie Dawson to tackle this threat. Katie’s plan is a set of imaginative and practical measures that include sustainable drainage measures to be built into planning applications, an inventory of natural drainage areas across the borough and no net loss of natural drainage capacity in new developments
Lib Dem and Labour councillors should be congratulated for working with us to push this plan through. Approval now lies in the hands of the Lib Dem-run council executive.
The package will make Islington a leader in the UK in adapting the planning system to deal with climate change, and will be a major step in making the borough a safer and more sustainable place.
