Rundown and soulless, this area needs heart transplant
• I AM a resident of Eden Grove, Holloway, writing in the hope I might be able to encourage Islington Council’s west area committee to support the flexible planning application proposals for Highbury Studios in order to bring life to the empty ground-floor units.
At the moment the area feels quite rundown and soulless. It would make such a change for everyone living in the area to have shops, restaurants and the proposed farmers’ market in the disused buildings. I believe it could really bring more of a community feel to the area.
The council’s planning department has advised that it is unlikely to support an application that supports increasing the number of shops in the area due to concerns that the Nag’s Head shopping centre will be affected.
But it seems to be missing the fact that since the new flats were built thousands more people live in the area and so surely the number of shops and conveniences should go up.
Anyway, there are no restaurants at the Nag’s Head (except Burger King) and surely no one will stop going to Morrisons in the current economic climate – no one could afford to!
Selby’s survived before the regeneration project and I am sure would continue to. I don’t believe anyone is suggesting a department store be installed at Highbury Studios. It wouldn’t fit for a start.
We just want our neighbourhood to have a bit more of a heart. Holloway Road doesn’t really have a community. It feels like a throughway and this is a chance to change that. I really hope everyone will support the flexible planning application. There is nothing to lose and potentially so much to gain.
