Science explosion in Black History Month
CHILDREN will be able to visit the Superlab featured in BBC1’s Waking the Dead programme during a hands-on science session tomorrow (Saturday).
A Day in the Life of a Scientist, part of Black History Month, runs from 10am to noon and 2.30-4.30pm at London Metropolitan University, in Holloway Road. To book, call 020 7133 4012. Superlab visits are for children over 12 only.
This year, Black History Month focuses on the contributions made by African-Caribbean people to scientific discovery and innovation.
A trip of a lifetime is being offered to Islington students who win a science-based writing competition. Top prize is a visit to Jamaica, where winning students will spend a week at The University of The West Indies.
Two students will travel to the Jamtech science summer residential course next year. The winners will take part in high-level science projects as well as exploring the environment and learning about the country’s culture.
Activities on offer range from visits to conservation projects, learning the steps of traditional Jamaican dances and making records in the style of Bob Marley.
The Town Hall’s Lib Dem leisure chief Councillor Ruth Polling said: “We want young people to be inspired to innovate, experiment and discover their potential.”
Students have to submit an essay about the environmental and energy challenges facing countries in the Caribbean and Africa and suggest some solutions. Deadline for entries is October 20. To find out about Black History Month, go to www.islington.gov.uk
