Deputy Mayor Anna Berent, Councillor Ruth Polling and Elizabeth Evans celebrate the centre opening
‘It was just a shed!’ £200,000 visitor centre is opened
CULPEPER Garden’s brand-new £200,000 visitor centre has opened with a fanfare at a special event for horticulturists from across the borough. Guests drank a toast to Elizabeth Evans, chairwoman of the garden’s management committee, and the team of supporters who made the centre possible.
The building’s architects from King Sturge have worked on a no-cost basis to create an attractive, environmentally friendly building that will complement the garden.
It was constructed from concrete and its surfaces provide a canvas for growing a rich tapestry of climbing plants. It also has a green roof to increase biodiversity.
Lib Dem executive member for leisure Ruth Polling said that volunteers had created a wonderful lush garden from what was, 20 years ago, a virtual wasteland . “Before they had an ageing shed,” she added, “now there is a wonderful centre for events, meetings and an office.”
Deputy Mayor Councillor Anna Berent praised the volunteers for their hard work and persistence.
The centre has been funded partly by the Veolia Environmental Trust and the Landfill Communities Fund. The majority of cash was raised by helpers.
