Kings’ book royalties will go to educate nomad kids of Kenya
In the name of the father and his artist daughter a Christian spiritual guide
AN Islington vicar and his daughter have collaborated on a stunning book of illustrations and poetry with a Christian theme to raise money for poor children in Africa. The Reverend Canon Dr Graham Kings, from St Mary’s Church, Upper Street, and his artist daughter Miriam have produced Signs & Seasons, a spiritual journey through the religious seasons in words and pictures, including meditations on Christmas, Easter and Lent.
The book was launched with a party of guests at Waterstone’s, Islington Green, on Wednesday.
All royalties from the book, which has a foreword by the Bishop of Durham Tom Wright, will go towards setting up schools for the children of the nomadic peoples of northern Kenya.
Rev Kings, who in 1999 walked from Oxford to Cambridge with a camel and raised £25,000 for nomad charities, wrote the poetry and script for the book while Miriam produced many of the images.
The Kings family spent seven years in Kenya where Rev Kings taught and never forgot the plight of the children, all desperate to learn but with very few facilities or schools.
Rev Kings said: “This is my first project with Miriam and we’re very pleased with it. The aim is to raise awareness and as much money as possible for the Church Mission Society for schools in northern Kenya. “The book has a spiritual theme aimed at those who may be members of a church or want to discover more about Christianity. “The area we’re raising money for is semi-arid and very tough. Because the people are nomads they move around but the children need to be in one place for school.”
Miriam, who has exhibited her work in the St Mary’s crypt, produced eight illustrations for the book.
She said: “I lived in Kenya for seven years when I was a child and you never forget the experience. “While I was there I made friends and you almost get used to the fact there is very little in the way of material goods. It is only when I came to Britain that I really began to appreciate just how poor these children are. “Many live in mud huts and at one school it was 60 to a class aged from six to 15.”
