LABOUR MP Jeremy Corbyn is planning to celebrate the life of former Holloway School teacher Jeffrey Gordon at a memorial event at the House of Commons. Mr Gordon, who taught at Holloway School in the 1970s and 1980s, died last month. He was 82.
Dozens of ex-pupils and former colleagues have paid tribute to the former teacher, who was among the first in Britain to pioneer work experience for pupils. He later worked for the now-defunct Inner London Education Authority. “I remember Jeff well from his time in Islington, both as a local resident and through his outstanding work at Holloway School and elsewhere in the borough,” Mr Corbyn, Islington North MP, said in a letter to the Tribune. “His regular classes in the upper school, meeting politicians from the widest political spectrum, were an outstanding initiative. “I was pleased to be among those who spoke at one of the sessions. There are hundreds of former Islington school pupils who benefited from Jeff’s innovatory teaching skills.”
A date for the memorial event will be announced on Friends Reunited website and in the Tribune shortly. Former pupils who would like to find out more should email editorial@islingtontribune.co.uk or call Eric Gordon on 020 7485 3426.
