Making the news for the right reasons!
WHEN 600 police officers stormed Blackstock Road five months ago, Finsbury Park hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The negative publicity spurred residents and businesses into action, culminating in the massive show of unity that was Sunday’s Blackstock Road festival. Described by one person as a “sorry we smashed up your street party”, the festival attracted more than 500 people eager to sample the delights on offer. Visitors enjoyed Algerian cakes, cuisine from the mainly Arab community, and got to know each other over a cup of tea. The road was cordoned off for dancing, live music, rappers, and fun games for children. The Memory Gardens stall, run by a group of autistic people, gave visitors the chance to try building things from pieces of foam, while others bought fair trade products from the St John’s Church stall.
