Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 15 August 2008

A lack of structure causes so many problems

• NO wonder young people continue to go off the rails if the comments of Labour councillor Lisa Spall are taken seriously (Youth clubs ‘stuck in table tennis past’, August 8).
She says that we should “get away from structured activities” for young people.
Doesn’t she understand that it is a lack of structure that causes so many problems in the first place?
What we need are more structured activities that get young people working in teams and building respect for themselves and each other, such as sports teams, or choirs.
Expecting council taxpayers to provide a free café and cinema when Islington already spends a fortune on youth clubs is not the answer.
It may keep a few youths off the streets for a little longer – but it will not solve the real problem.
