Judge fears asylum seeker will ‘return to underworld’
THOUSOUNDS of illegal Chinese immigrants who commit crimes in the UK cannot be deported because their Government refuses to have them back, an Old Bailey court heard this week. The loophole was revealed after Judge Anthony Morris, QC, said he wanted to send a woman back to her homeland to stop her returning to organised gangs in north London.
Failed asylum seeker Hong Guo, 20, was caught during a raid by the Nag’s Head Safer Neighbourhoods police team on an area of Holloway Road notorious for the sale of fake DVDs.
Guo, of Crowndale Road, Camden Town, was convicted by an Old Bailey jury of possessing 40,000 counterfeit discs valued at about £120,000 “on the open market.”
The films have since been destroyed on the orders of the judge.
Judge Morris said he was aware Guo “will return to the underworld” in London unless she is sent back to China. But despite his recommendation that she be deported she will probably remain in the UK, not legally permitted to work or claim benefits.
Guo was given a nine-month community order.
