Finsbury centre to be demolished
FINSBURY leisure centre will be demolished, Ruth Polling, Islington’s leisure chief, announced this week. The results of the public consultation on the redevelopment of Finsbury centre and the Ironmonger Row baths have finally been compiled into a recommendation to be considered before the council executive at the end of the month.
Councillor Polling said the new development will include 435 square metres of housing – almost half the amount suggested in two of the options put before the public.
The new plans will include an extra storey above Ironmonger Row baths, more green space and room for extra sports facilities.
The brief will then go out to designers who will be expected to fulfil the council’s wishlist as they bid for the contract.
Cllr Polling said the council will combine the redevelopment of the Sobell Centre with the Finsbury contract to get the best deal.
